Dye ink uses colour substances that are dissolved in a liquid while Pigment ink uses small colour particles that are held in a suspension. The water soluble dye can be seen as sugar that dissolves in water and the pigments as sand mixed in water. ... Initial print quality between dye and pigment ink is virtually the same.

What’s the Difference Between Dye-Based and Pigment Ink?
Choose Dye or Pigment Inkjet Ink?
    Are pigment inks waterproof?

    Dye Ink

    • Made from dyes which are soluble in Carrier (generally water)
    • Have less fade resistance due to very small color particle size.
    • Prints are relatively less sharp on normal papers.
    • Prints are not waterproof on copier papers or plain papers
    • Prints are vibrant in color
    • Dye inks are very economical
    • Have a long shelf life. Generally more than 2-3 years

    Pigment Ink

    • Made from Pigments which are insoluble in Carrier (generally water)
    • Pigment Ink have good fade resistance due to large colorant particle size
    • Prints are crisp and sharp on normal papers
    • Prints are waterproof on copier or plain papers
    • Prints are less vibrant
    • Pigment inks are costly
    • Have a relatively short shelf life. Generally less than 2 years.
